Big Girl
Big Girl, a New York project conceived by vocalist and guitarist Kaitlin Pelkey, is a fierce and captivating 6-piece rock n' roll band. Big Girl’s music is expansive and cathartic, combining indie-rock vulnerability with irreverent punk energy. Their harmonically adventurous songs are filled with delicious lyrics, and athletic guitar playing, driven by soaring vocals – sometimes a chorus of them.
"The larger than life sextet, led by wild front-woman Kaitlin Pelkey, knows how to command a stage and quite frankly any room they occupy with their wonderfully electric and often times frenetic live sets.” (Full Time Aesthetic) Three singers head the stage with circus-like choreography, and vocals that oscillate between the grave tones of a preacher to the sass of a schoolgirl. Guitars tremble and wail while drums crackle and burst in improvised interludes before seamlessly checking into a groove. The band will sound like Deerhoof one moment, only to take a hairpin turn into the textures of Sleater-Kinney or the intimacy of Phoebe Bridgers.
Edging
The Chicago Art based punks Edging are here to liberate the freaks and weirdos. Live, almost the entire band becomes a rhythm section as Faith Callaway (singer) beats and shakes a tambourine and Tyler Meneese rhythmically honks and blows away on his woodwind. You could say Edging was on the edge of while edging professionally and recreationally. One of Edging’s main hallmarks is Meneese’s wild saxophone playing. It gives the band a very American feel not unlike artists like Downtown Boys or Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. The album titles, Good Sex Music and their newest record, Concrete Cumming, are big vibe indicators. A modern sound requires modern content, and for Faith Callaway and Will Sallee, Edging’s chief lyricists, that means commentary on issues like trauma, misogyny, relentless mental battles and social injustice. In their words, these are “ALL FRUSTRATIONS OF THE CURRENT WORLD,” and it’s time the current world got fucked by an Edging show.
