Dusk
Out of a cornfield eden at the northern tip of Lake Winnebago comes Wisconsin’s Dusk, a unique country rock ’n’ roll group that blends their rural roots and love for 60s and 70s soul. Formed in 2014, the band has been a favorite of midwest and east coast stages, sharing bills and tours with the likes of Sheer Mag, Screaming Females, and Reigning Sound.
The outfit is six strong, each a song-er, sing-er, and multi-instrumentalist in their own right. Julia Blair at the Wurlitzer piano. Ryley Crowe on pedal steel guitar, Tyler Ditter and Bill Grasley on electric guitar, Amos Pitsch behind the drums, and Ridley Tankersley on bass guitar.
Their newest LP “Glass Pastures,” the group’s first since 2017’s full-length debut “Dusk”, is not only a museum of earworms, but a crusade in the name of love and truth. Produced between 2020-2022 in the various rooms of the band’s recording studio, Crutch of Memory, a mid-century castle in the heart of Appleton, Wisconsin, the album showcases a range of writing and vocal talents. Therein is Dusk’s force– its spirit– the breadth of voice unified and concentrated like a beam of light on a ruby velvet curtain.
Burner Herzog
Burner Herzog was formed by multi-instrumentalist Jasper Leach (Tony Molina Band, Smiles) as an outlet for some of his more overly ambitious recording projects. Inspired by Arthur Russell, Sun Ra and Paul Simon's Graceland, the project set out to make impossible-to-play-live pop symphonies. Leach completed debut mini-album Wonderful American in 2017 and formed a live lineup, the Universal Forces, to promote its release that summer. The group has played alongside Shannon Shaw, tunEyarDs, Gary Wilson and many others. The group signed with legendary Bay Area label Paisley Shirt Records in 2020 to release BIG LOVE which saw positive reviews from Austin Town Hall, Week in Pop, and RIFF Magazine. Relocating to New York, the band recorded a new, harder-edged LP, Random Person, with producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Dresden Dolls, Swans), released on Take A Turn Records in October 2023.
Velvet Vaughan
Born and raised in Nashville, TN, Velvet Vaughan grew up side stage with her two musician parents, watching as they toured and performed with some of country music's greatest acts. After moving to NYC at 18 to pursue a career in acting, she soon found herself writing songs, drawing inspiration from artists such as Dolly Parton, Stevie Knicks, and Carly Simon. After writing and singing for herself for several years, Velvet assembled a band of some of her favorite players in Brooklyn. She released her first single "Sleep Walk" at the beginning of the pandemic, and spent the rest of her newfound time at home recording her dreamy, country-inspired debut full-length album, coming early 2023.
